ALEX WONDERGEM IS PLAYFUL AND INTUITIVE ON LIBER8TED, HIS THIRD EP
Alex Wondergem’s third EP, Liber8ted, marks the final milestone on the introspective journey his rapper persona set out on as presented in previous EPs, “Off the Dome” and “Tales of the Innerverse”.
Continuing the time honored tradition of hip-hop projects with childhood pictures as cover art, the cover art for “Liber8ted” is 10-year old Alex with a gap-toothed, infectious smile posed against a summer blue sky.
On Liber8ted, Alex Wondergem is playful, intuitive and exuberant as he makes peace with self-diagnosed flaws, and celebrates a successful reunion with his inner child. Just like his gap-toothed smile, his flows are irregularly paced with high energy delivery of lyrics that are composed simply and sing-along style.
Alex Wondergem spins a 3-act story of the benefits of self-belief, power of imagination and a focus on purpose across 7 song in Liber8ted.
The Liber8ted EP opens with title track, “Liber8ted”, a voilin-section, orchestral-sounding production with hard-hitting drums where Alex makes his intentions clear: “this that motivation / wake up build a nation”.
On track 2, “Sensation”, Alex relies on the power of his imagination: “Imma be a sensation / use my imagination run the whole damn nation” over melodic beats with heavy bounce.
Act 1 closes out with “No Competition”, which
sounds like it could soundtrack a Legend Of Zelda game. In “No Competition”, Alex seems to be reminding himself: “I’m on a mission / I’ve got a vision”.
Liber8ted continues on with Act 2, which is about reaping the benefits of staying true to himself and reconnecting with his inner child.
“Success”, which is track 4, has Alex championing peace of mind:
“Less Stress, more success / to the top to the top to the top
Less Stress, more success / and I can’t and I can’t and I will not stop”
Peace of mind doesn’t mean much without a budget though, so Alex is anticipating financial success on “Benjaminz”:
“Mama told me imma win / so I keep on pushing
yea i was born a king / Ali in the ring so I keep on pushing”
NEVER GIVE UP, which was released as lead single in November 2021 to critical reviews and editorial playlisting on Spotify, opens Act 3 of Liber8ted.
In Act 3 Alex Wondergem is celebrating life, feeling grounded and ready for the next adventure in his life.
The final track on Liber8ted is “What a life”. On “What A Life”, Alex Wondergem recollects the sacrifices made along his journey of self-discovery, then concludes: “Can’t stop the boy just won’t quit / It’s in my spirit!”. He even sings us a hook in Ga language before letting the beat ride out, a preemptive yet effective selfpat on the back.
All the songs on Liber8ted was self produced by Alex Wondergem and composed with help of collaborator, sound engineer Sei Beatz. Listening to Liber8ted is a cohesive experience, with well-sequenced tracks and transitions that make it feel like one big song.
In this pervading season of anxiety and uncertainty, Liber8ted is a timely highly danceable reminder from Alex Wondergem as humans, that all we need is truly within us(and it is up to us to tune in). Liber8ted definitely has high Replay Value.
