I had the pleasure of attending “I Killed Flowers For You”, Boyd’s headlining concert on Thursday September 14th 2023, and it was an enjoyable and entertaining experience.
Boyd is a singer & songwriter who lives in Accra. He released his first project in 2020 and while he has been an active performer on the Accra live music circuit, this was Boyd’s first solo concert.
His concert started at 730PM with a DJ set by B.Frvnkie. The unexpected traffic in town that night meant a delay in arriving and settling in for a majority of the audience, who trickled in a couple at a time.
Jamestown Coffee Co’s interior, which was the venue of the concert, had been transformed into an inviting atmosphere.
A drape of flowers welcomed you as you walked in, with candles subtly positioned to guide you towards your seating.
The chairs were arranged in a semi-circle facing the stage, as if we were around a fire (and truly, Boyd brought that heat to the stage, as a mini cascade of torn out book pages fluttered overhead).
Shoutout to jojotemming, the renowned and award-winning set designer for this enchanting transformation that suited the concert theme of love, longing and loss.
When Boyd stepped onto the stage at just past 8PM, there was an undeniable tingling sensation that permeated all of us. We waited with bated breath as he welcomed us to his world.
Boyd’s vocal range and breath control was remarkable and his mic technique was effective. As he effortlessly glided between soulful ballads and high-energy bops, it was evident to us in the audience that every note was infused with emotion that grounded us in the moment and left us spellbound.
The stage presence exhibited by Boyd was captivating. He commanded the stage with a magnetic energy, effortlessly engaging the crowd.
Boyd’s live rendition of Awula was electrifying. The seamless interaction between him and his band, the Musical Lunatics showcased a level of chemistry that elevated the entire performance. He was accompanied by The Musical Lunatics with Tino Zekpa setting the groove on bass, Eugene Anderson on drums and David on guitar providing the rhythmic pulse. The melodies of Ayikwei Aryee on keyboard and the harmonizing background vocals of SK and Madame Efua rounded out the band.
The production value for this concert was expert, with dynamic lighting and the sound quality was exceptional, allowing every instrument and lyric to be heard with perfect clarity. Nii Quaye, record producer and CEO of the Musical Lunatics, who was musical director for the concert really orchestrated the night.
Boyd exuded genuine warmth and gratitude, making everyone feel like they were a part of something special. This sense of connection added an intimate touch to the concert, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in attendance. When he began the introduction to “Lost”, a fan favourite, he was greeted with an audible cheer from the audience.
Boyd’s family were present to experience his show for the first time and they led the applause in the front row when he received a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of his performance.
It’s clear that Boyd is an accomplished performer and musician. If you have the chance to witness him perform live, don’t hesitate – it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
